Debate: Do you think the Apple 3G iPhone can beat the BlackBerry Bold and HTC Touch Diamond?

May 12th, 2008 by James

Put up against each other which would you prefer, the Apple 3G iPhone, the BlackBerry Bold/9000 or the HTC Touch Diamond? Could you make a choice between there three upcoming mobile phones?

Three mobile phones for you to generally ponder over and maybe let us know how you feel about them as it will be you people who will be buying the Apple 3G iPhone, the BlackBerry Bold/9000 and the HTC Touch Diamond once they hit the shelves. And so you know just the ones we are on about we will speak a little about each of them in turn and have an image for your viewing pleasure; so feel free to drop us a comment anytime.

Ok, let’s begin with the Apple 3G iPhone; we all expect the Apple 3G iPhone to hit somewhere around June and is rumoured to be launching at the WWDC conference, but is the 3G iPhone the phone to end all mobile phones? Apparently Apple’s new gem will come to us in 3 sizes, the 8GB costing $399.00 , the 16GB costing $99.00, and the 32GB with a price tag of $599.00, although the 32GB version has yet to be confirmed.

Apple 3G iPhone

It is also presumed that Apple is to trim off somewhere in the region of 2.5mm off the casing which will undoubtedly make the 3G iPhone so much slimmer, casing material is also rumoured to be different. Apple are apparently putting a S-GOLD3H 3G chip inside the 3G iPHone which should gain HSDPA speeds up to 7.2Mbps although not in America. There is also talk of a front facing camera which may be supported by the S-GOLD3H 3G chip, but at this time this is still only a rumour. Finally everyone will have probably read everything there is on the Apple 3G iPhone specs, so let’s more onto the next mobile phone in this comparison debate.

From the guys a RIM comes the new BlackBerry Bold/9000 whether they will opt to just call it the Bold or 9000 is yet to be seen. Guess we’ll refer to this one as the Bold for now; anyway, the Bold is a new messaging smartphone from RIM which features a stunning TFT display that has the same half-resolution of that of the Apple iPhone, and a fully QWERTY keyboard. Rim’s BlackBerry Bold will run on the BlackBerry OS 4.6 which is the latest version, and has a 1GB built-in memory and also the trusty old microSD card slot which will also support 8GB microSDHC and a promise of 16GB support.

BlackBerry Bold/9000

The Bold has a 624MHz processor to make it run smoothly or so we have been informed, and is roughly about the same size as the Blackberry 8830. The Bold is said to be the first BlackBerry to feature tri-band HSDPA, quad-band GSM/EDGE and integrated GPS receiver and WiFi. A few specs for you to chew over while making you decision: 3G network UMTS 850/1900/2100, 2G network GSM 850/900/1800/1900, Trackball navigation, MP3 and Polyphonic ringtones, wallpapers, Photocall and Phonebook, 3.5 jack, 128MB built-in memory, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, SMS, MMS, Email, games, 2 megapixel camera, BlackBerry maps, and measures 114 x 66 x 14mm with a weight of 133 grams.

Ok moving onto the last of the tree, the HTC Touch Diamond. It has to be said the HTC Touch Diamond is visually stunning with its HTC Touch 3D interface which is also known as the HTC Manila. The HTC Touch Diamond has been touch optimised and is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, and incorporates a stunning 2.8 inch VGA display. The Touch Diamond is only 11.5mm thick which will no doubt please the masses. The Touch Diamond incorporates a built-in accelerometer of similar designs to that of the Apple iPhone and allows for automatic screen rotation changing the screen from portrait to landscape by simple turning the handset.

HTC Touch Diamond

The HTC Touch Diamond also comes with a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus, GPS receiver and WiFi. It runs on a Qualcomm MSM7201A 52B Mhz processor and has 192MB DDR SDRAM, FM radio with RDS and 4GB memory. However a few downsides to the HTC Touch Diamond are that it is tri-band only GSM support. There is to be two versions released in Europe and Asia and another version for America, and there’s the other down side it only spores a 900 mAh battery. HTC’s Touch Diamond is due to hit Europe and Asian shores in June 08 and other areas by the end of the year, and will have specs such as: 3G network HSDPA 2100/900 and 2G network GSM 900/1800/1900 for Europe and Asia, 3G HSDPA 580/1900 and 2G GSM 850/1800/1900 of America. Touch-screen is 2.8 inches TFT with TouchFLO 3D finger swipe navigation, handwriting recognition, MP3, WAV, WMA and Polyphonic ringtones, miniUSB, SMS. MMS, Email and instant messaging, secondary VGA videocall camera, Java MIDP 2.0, Pocket Office, with measurements at 102 x 51 x 11.5mm and weighing in at 110 grams including battery.

Well there they are all three, which one would you prefer to have in your hand? Which do you think would be the best performer, or best looking? Maybe you have your own reasons for choosing the one you like the best so why not hit us up and let us know. So the question is which would you choose out of the Apple 3G iPhone, the BlackBerry Bold/9000 and the HTC Touch Diamond? I look forward to receiving your comments.

FCC has the HTC Touch Diamond mobile phone

May 12th, 2008 by James

Apparently the FCC has begun tinkering with the Windows 6.1 HTC touch Diamond, HTC’s latest smartphone offering. The HTC Diamond has a revamped TouchFLO interface along with a big and beautiful VGA touch-screen, and also incorporating a grocery list of features.

Although, the HTC Touch Diamond is probably the most anticipated smartphone to come out of the Taiwanese phone maker’s R&D labs probably since the launch of their HTC TyTn II/AT&T Tilt Kaiser. Still I guess we will just simply have to wait and see if HTC actually make good their promise to deliver the HTC Touch Diamond to us other countries outside Europe and Asia sometime later this year.

RIM BlackBerry Phones get Microsoft Windows Live Hotmail and Messenger

May 12th, 2008 by Daniel

The best services these days are made by big brands coming together in a joint effort to give more to the consumer, this is just what Research In Motion (RIM) and Microsoft announced today as they combine services to give BlackBerry smartphones something extra. Just moments ago in a press release, it was said that Microsoft Windows Live services like Hotmail and Messenger will help enhance the communications experience on BlackBerry phones, the agreement with Microsoft Corp. means that users can communicate in real time using push technology for an amazing mobile communications experience.

BlackBerry customers will only have to enter their user and password information once and then from that moment they will be able to access their Windows Live Messenger and Hotmail accounts. Its great to see RIM looking at more ways to help their customers have more communications options, in a world that is more about global communication than ever before. Other features in this new partnership include the ability to use more than 60 emoticons, send and receive pictures and files, showcase their Display Picture (Avatar), save conversations, customize status messages, send instant messages and join group chats, use BlackBerry “push” technology for automatic message delivery and message synchronization.

With more than 430 million people around the world using Windows Live to keep in touch, this is a great feature on Blackberry phones, that could help give the brand an edge. Do you own a Blackberry and would these new features benefit you?

Codenamed iPerformer is the Apple iPhone fighting Nokia 5800 Tube

May 12th, 2008 by James

Nokia has pushed out quite a few mobile phones lately ranging from the dirt-cheap end through the middle range and on up into the high-end, and well one thing is for sure, Nokia isn’t that intriguing when it comes to codenames, which is quite obvious when you take into consideration the newest of codenames Nokia are using.

Word has it Nokia is referring to their S60 Touch OS based Apple iPhone killing mobile phone as the “iPerformer.” Yep, bit of a lame codename but regardless rumour has it the “iPerformer” will hit with a widescreen touch-screen as expected, GPS, NaviScroll, FM radio/ transmitter, QWERTY keypad, Bluetooth, TV out, WiFi, and Web cam, although it’s not quite clear with the webcam deal, but Nokia are the guys when it comes to cameras so we’ll roll with it for now.

Unfortunately the pricing and launch window is still unknown, but any details on the “iPerformer” at this stage are good. Just an afterthought though, it’s not too clear if the iPerformer is the codename for the Nokia 5800 tube, or maybe that of the iPhone killing touch-screen device that is due to follow after it; my guess would be the Tube though, but I could be wrong.

Can Apple 3G iPhone beat Blackberry Bold and HTC Touch Diamond?

May 12th, 2008 by Mark

Apple 3G iPhone
We have three phones and three good ones at that and call this a debate or just a general what is the best model one way or another surely there must be a clear winner, the only people that will let us all know is you the people who will buy them. You will read below all about the Apple 3G iPhone, the Blackberry Bold and the HTC Touch Diamond where I will talk a little about each phone with specs and pictures and I will put across what I feel is the best, but you may agree or disagree with my opinion which I am well up for hearing your opinion.

Let me start of with the much talked about Apple 3G iPhone, we all know by now that this device will be launching in June sometime and apparently is launching at the WWDC conference but is this the phone of all phones? The Apple 3G iPhone will come in three sizes which start of with 8GB for $399 then there is the 16GB version for $499 and the one I would choose which is the 32GB version for $599, you must remember though that the 32GB Apple 3G iPhone has not yet been confirmed as far as we can tell. So far what we know is that Apple are going to trim off a stunning 2.5mm off the current iPhone’s case which will give the 3G iPhone a very slim advantage over most phones similar to this one, the casings material may be different as well. The Apple 3G iPhone will boast an Infineon-based S-GOLD3H 3G chip which will be able to get HSDPA speeds up to 7.2Mbps (Not in America though), there were talks of a front facing video-call camera which may be supported by the supported by the Infineon S-GOLD3H 3G chip and speculated by Kevin Rose but this is just a rumor at the moment. We all know the main specs of the Apple 3G iPhone so I will move onto the next phone. Possible photos of the Apple 3G iPhone.

blackberry bold

The next muck talked about phone is the Blackberry 9000 also known as the Blackberry Bold which is out now, this is a brand new messaging smartphone which will deliver so much more than any other smartphone messenger. I will talk a little about the specs but you can see the full specifications below this information, The all new BlackBerry Bold features a stunning and yes large TFT display with the same half-VGA resolution as the Apple iPhone’s (480 x 320 pixels) plus has a cool full QWERTY keyboard. The Blackberry Bold will run on the latest Blackberry OS 4.6, it has 1GB built in memory plus a microSD memory card slot which supports 8GB microSDHC cards plus there is promise of 16GB support. The 624MHz processor will run smoothly we have been told, just so you get an idea of the size it is the same size as the Blackberry 8830. The Blackberry Bold is apparently the first Blackberry smartphone to feature tri-band HSDPA support besides the quad-band GSM/EDGE one and with integrated GPS receiver and Wi-Fi you know you are getting something special. Check out the main specifications of the Blackberry Bold below.

Blackberry Bold Specifications -
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900, 3G Network UMTS 850 / 1900 / 2100, Full QWERTY keyboard, Trackball navigation, Wallpapers, MP3 & Polyphonic Ringtones, Vibration, 3.5 mm stereo headset jack, Photocall & Phonebook, Call records, 128 MB built in memory plus microSD (TransFlash), microSDHC, up to 8 GB Card slot, 1 GB storage memory, 624 MHz processor, GPRS Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots), 32 - 48 kbps, EDGE Class 10, 236.8 kbps, 3G HSDPA 3.6 Mbps, WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g, Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP, USB v2.0, BlackBerry OS, SMS, MMS, Email, Instant Messaging, HTML Browser, Games, 2 MP Camera - 1600×1200 pixels, video, flash, Built-in GPS, BlackBerry maps, Media player MP3/WMA/AAC+, Video player DivX/WMV/XviD/3gp, DataViz document viewer/editor, Java, Organizer, Calculator, Voice dial, Built-in handsfree, Voice memo, Stand-by Up to 310 hours plus Talk time Up to 5 hours, 114 x 66 x 14 mm and 133 grams in weight with battery.

htc-touch-diamond

Last but not least we have the HTC Touch Diamond which is without a doubt a stunning cell phone which feature the impressive HTC Touch 3D interface which is also known as HTC Manila, HTC Diamond is truly touch-optimized which will be favored by the masses. The HTC Touch Diamond is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro and has a stunning 2.8-inch VGA display and with a size of only 11.5mm thin this will be the phone we can see many people choosing, it also has the built in accelerometer which is basically the same as the Apple iPhone, just a re-cap of what the built in accelerometer is (Basically it allows screen auto rotation, so turn the phone and you get landscape and then turn it back and you get portrait. You will get a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus plus Wi-Fi and a GPS receiver.

The HTC Touch Diamond has 192MB DDR SDRAM, runs on a Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 MHz processor, FM radio with RDS plus 4GB of storage memory (no memory card slot). I really do like this phone but there are downsides, shame really because this is a sexy phone but in reality there has to be downsides to everything. The downside is the tri-band-only GSM support, yes there will be two versions one for Asia and Europe plus another for America, the other downside as to be the small 900 mAh battery. The HTC Touch Diamond will be available in June 2008 in Europe and Asia and other regions at the end of the year. Please do check out the full specifications below.

HTC Touch Diamond Specifications -
2G Network GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900 for Europe/Asia - GSM 850 / 1800 / 1900 for Americas - 3G Network HSDPA 2100 / 900 for Europe/Asia - HSDPA 850 / 1900 for Americas, 2.8 Inch TFT Touchscreen Display with 65K colors & 480 x 640 pixels, TouchFLO 3D finger swipe navigation, Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate, Touch-sensitive navigation control, Handwriting recognition, Vibration, MP3, WAV, WMA & Polyphonic (40 channels) Ringtones, Phonebook & Photocall plus Call records, No Card slot but does have 4 GB user available memory, 192 MB DDR SDRAM, 256 MB ROM, Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 Mhz processor, GPRS Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots) 32 - 48 kbps, EDGE Class 10 - 236.8 kbps, 3G HSDPA - 7.2 Mbps, WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP, miniUSB, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS, SMS, MMS, Email & Instant Messaging, HTML & WAP 2.0/xHTML Browser, Games, 3.2 MP Camera with autofocus, video plus secondary VGA videocall camera, Built-in GPS with A-GPS, Voice memo, Java MIDP 2.0, Pocket Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PDF viewer), Stereo FM radio with RDS, Built-in handsfree, MP3 player, Up to 285 hours standby time, Up to 5 hours 30 minutes talk time, 102 x 51 x 11.5 mm and 110 grams in weight with battery

My personal opinion – This is a difficult one really, at the moment I am personally using the Apple iPhone and swear by it so sometimes when you love using something so much you become biast, personally the best looking phone without any doubt in my mind has to be the HTC Touch Diamond but it is the hope of a 32GB Apple 3G iPhone which sways me towards that. I do not have a lot of experience with any BlackBerry device but this Blackberry Bold seems like a very good business phone. The tri-band HSDPA support and Wi-Fi makes this a good contender, personally just going on the looks the BlackBerry Bold is off my list.

So that leaves me with the Apple 3G iPhone and the HTC Touch Diamond, I do love the look of the HTC Touch Diamond much more than the iPhone but it is the iPhone I would personally go for because I know how it works, how it acts and how easy it is to use and the fact 32GB storage within.

Please let us know what you would choose out of the Apple 3G iPhone beat Blackberry Bold and HTC Touch Diamond and please do answer this question - Can Apple 3G iPhone beat Blackberry Bold and HTC Touch Diamond?

First Halo 3 vs COD4, now Resistance 2 (Sony PS3) vs Gears of War 2 on Xbox 360

May 12th, 2008 by Daniel

After playing games like Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, the next game in their class has to equal them and be much more. On the upcoming games, we want features that are both different and unique, the good news is 2008 may be bringing just that. Last year it was COD4 vs Halo 3, but in 2008 we will see the Sony PS3’s Resistance 2 up against Gears of War 2 on the Xbox 360.

You can see a new video below explaining the features in Resistance 2 and some gameplay, this game will not only feature 60 players on one map, but it will also have battles within battles. They are taking the gameplay we love so much and adding some unique features, and that’s just why this game has not been released yet. Insomniac will make sure everything is right before they release Resistance 2 and looking at the video below, you can see it looking good.

While Gears of War 2 will look stunning, it does not seem to have added much from the last version, well not compared to Resistance 2 anyway and if these two are the big games of 2008, you need to give a lot more. The first Resistance game was not good enough in my opinion, I played it for a few hours but found it lacked what other games had. This sequel makes up for that in many ways and it looks like a lot more has gone into it. Gears of War 2 will have the better graphics by a long way, but if your talking gameplay, my money is on Resistance 2, but that’s if they can pull it off with the 60 player online play.

The biggest problem with some of the PSN games currently is hosting a game, on Call of Duty 4 you get many games starting and then saying “Host Ended Game”. This is very annoying and what should have happened, is the host role should have been passed to another player. If that situation happens again with Resistance 2 and 60 player online gaming, it will be a big fault.

Two other big upcoming games include killzone 2 and mgs4, but these are Playstation 3 exclusives. Watch the video below and let us know what you think of Resistance 2.

Bluetooth GPS receiver the BT-Q818 eXtreme most powerful in world by QStarz

May 12th, 2008 by James

Yes apparently QStarz are claiming their BT-Q818 eXtreme Bluetooth GPS receiver is the most powerful in the world. And one has to say that the features with this device are somewhat impressive to say the least, and it also includes 51 Channel Performance tracking which allows for faster acquisition and reacquisition.

Other impressive features include, 32 hours of use due to low power consumption, WAAS+EGNOS support, fast position support cold start 39s, warm start 36s, hot start 1s, and automatic on/off function. Navigadget reckons the difference is made due to the adjustable update rate that can be somewhere between 1 and 5Hz which makes the device suitable for application where timing is critical.

A few of the industry publications have already awarded the QStarz BT-Q818 several awards, as an example Pocketnavigation.de says the Bluetooth GPS receiver provides users with “very high sensitivity and accuracy, long running time as well,” and Spanish Pcedmano.com rates the BT-Q818 9.5 out of 10 points. Want to learn more about the world’s most powerful Bluetooth GPS receiver than visit QStarz website.

PBN Review-Were You Raised by Wolves?

May 12th, 2008 by Elizabeth

The introduction to Christie Mellor’s Were You Raised By Wolves? Clues to the Mysteries of Adulthood is titled “Hello, Brand New Grown-up!”, but her advice is so practical, even not-brand-new grown-ups can benefit from it. Her goal is to demystify the brave new world of moving the heck OUT of your parents’ house already by dispensing practical wisdom on everything from basic cooking and cleaning tips to how to dress both in the workplace and just how to dress so that you don’t, you know, embarrass yourself.

Mellor begins with the absolute basics-what the new grown-up needs to know to live on their own. How to make a bed, for example, with a drawing showing exactly how to tuck in the corners. How to clean a toilet, 20 amazing uses for baking soda (seriously, it’s unbelievable how many uses there are for baking soda and yet it’s still so cheap to buy), how to really deep clean before company comes. Useful kitchen tips include how to make coffee that is drinkable, how to hard-boil eggs, make basic soup and salad dressing, even how to make homemade mayonnaise. I turned down the corner on the page for how to poach chicken, because it never occurred to me to add bay leaf and peppercorns to the liquid!

Her chapter title “You, in the World. Not Being an Embarassment” has advice on how to tip, how to be a good party guest, how to be an even better houseguest, and how to handle situations involving alcohol. She even has a detailed drawing on how to build a cool little outdoor bar for your patio. But my favorite chapter title has to be “Put on Those Big Boy Pants!”, with advice on how to act like a real grown-up by throwing a dinner party, arranging flowers, and making a hostess gift.

I’m telling you, if someone you know is graduating from college this year, or moving out of their parents’ house and getting their first apartment, be a good friend and get them this book. It’s not just a boring list of “things you should know”. It’s written in a casual, friendly, well-meaning style and it is chock full of really useful information. I could have used a book like this when I first lived on my own!

The book is available on Amazon.com. Buy a copy, put it in a gift box along with some dishtowels and potholders, and you’ve got the perfect “congratulations on getting your first place” gift! To read what other reviewers thought, stop by the Parent Bloggers Network blog to get links to other reviews. Thanks again, PBN!

Proof the Chinese do not care about copyright with fake SCNY FE-230 mobile phone

May 12th, 2008 by James

This is the SCNY FE-230 mobile phone made by the Chinese and obviously infringes on the Sony Ericsson trademark, but in the world’s fastest growing economy doesn’t anyone really care? Personally I doubt it very much otherwise something would have been done long ago to halt the Chinese infringement of mobile phones.

The SCNY FE-230 sports a 5 megapixel camera complete with auto-focus, and well if it wasn’t actually a fake one could have said it was of an interesting design. Actually it looks a tad like some older Sony Ericsson models that looks somewhat more like digital cameras that actual mobile handsets.

So just for your information the original SCNY mobile phone sports a Xenon flash and optical zoom, and its 6800 mAh battery should bring quite a few hours of talk and standby time. Unfortunately the SCNY FE-230 happens to sport a fake Sony logo the SCNY on its rear side. It surprised me that the Chinese mobile phone handset cloners just don’t make their own brand, how about F.A.K.E. or maybe R.I.P.O.F.F. perhaps?
