One Tree Hill guest star Kate Voegele becomes Ford’s voice for road safety

Kate Voegele has been a guest star of TV’s One Tree Hill, and she is also a recording artist for Interscope Records, but now she is undertaking a much more important role, as the voice for Ford’s teen road safety message. In Illinois the teen fatalities dropped a massive 61 percent in 2008, this was thanks to the state launching a tough teen safety campaign that was modeled after the DSFL (Driving Skills for Life). Now that the Illinois Department of Transportation and Ford Motor Company Fund have joined forces with Kate Voegele, they hope she will be the entertainment industry’s voice for road safety and also an encouragement for young drivers to drive safety during prom season.

Most areas of the world have many auto related deaths each year, but in Illinois between Jan. 1 - April 15 last year 57 people lost their life in auto incidents. If you compare that to this year, 22 people lost their life, which is an improvement but that figure still needs to go down. With Kate Voegele sending the message, its hoped they can lower the amount of deaths. It’s also hoped that other states will follow the lead of Illinois and the commitment of teens around that state. One of the most powerful messages is that of your friends and Ford’s Driving Skills for Life program hopes to help “engage teens to develop save driving campaigns throughout the country”, this is because the most effective influencers of teens, is other teens.

Kate Voegele as a 21-year-old, is going to commit a lot to this message and will be appearing at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy’s prom on Friday, May 16. She will also be airing a series of public service announcements on Chicago’s 103.5 KISS-FM over the next few days.

Prom is a great time for teens and lets hope it also ends up being one with a lot less auto death.

No Sony PS3 price cut in 2008 could lead to better online services

When I bought my Sony PS3 in the UK a while ago, it cost £425 and today you will get one for around £300, so if 2008 does not bring us another price cut, it should not matter too much. For the current price, you not only get a fantastic games system and media center, but you also get a Sony Blu-ray player. If analysts are right, and Sony do not cut the price of the Playstation 3 in 2008, we could then end up with much better online services thanks to Sony aiming at being more profitable and spending less time on price battles.

If you are a gamer waiting for a price cut, then you may be unlucky, although this still may happen; most people agree it’s unlikely. Sony has made a prediction that it will sell eight million PS3 consoles around the world in 2008, this would be an increase of 8% on the figures in 2007. It’s a good idea for Sony to focus on the quality of their service rather than competing for market share with the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. I can think of many improvements we need on the PS3 and one would be the way we chat with other gamers, it would be nice to chat in the game and out of the game without disconnecting.

This year will be a great year for the gamer and as someone that’s been gaming for over 25 years, I know we have so much more going for us gamers these days than ever, thanks to three great next-gen games systems and the way we can connect to other gamers over the internet.

Location based solution patent app for Apple iPhone

Some time ago if you remember Apple applied for a patent application that hinted at the Cupertino based fruit company working with Starbucks. Well it seems that it’s even more likely now that Apple will come through with a location based solution for allowing their iPhone owners to be able to interact with their own surroundings.

Apple’s previous patent application surfaced back in December. The USPTO documentation outlines a method which allows an Apple iPhone user to possibly order Starbucks menu items remotely via their iPhone handset, and then be notified once their order is ready for collection.

Apple iPhone

Well now there is a new patent application from Apple which shows possibly more location based services for their iPhone. The latest documentation subtly hints at bringing the Apple iPhone-Starbucks idea into other areas such as movies, concerts, local events and restaurant reviews.

By using a short range wireless network such as AT&T WiFi Hotspots, which we are beginning to see pop up in Starbucks and Barnes & Noble locations, Apple wishes to enable their iPhone users to be able to order from customised menus based on allergies and food preferences. This expanded system could even allow for an iPhone user to purchase a movie or even concert tickets remotely.

Apple iPhone

The location based system could possibly be used to push customised info to the Apple iPhone passing by particular business fronts, maps, weather, city information in an airport, and flight schedules for an example. An Apple iPhone user would only need to log into the WiFi network on their iPhone handset in order to receive local information pushed to their iPhone.

This is somewhat of an intriguing idea and could possible become a great success with airports and restaurants. Wouldn’t it just be superb to be able to order from a menu or even purchase tickets from your mobile phone? Let’s hope Apple hasn’t locked all this down too firmly so other platforms can maybe take advantage as well.

New Jawbone Bluetooth Headset launched by Aliph

The Jawbone Bluetooth headset was originally well received, and now Aliph’s sequel has launched right at the top to become Aliph’s new flagship product. Such a high accolade is justifiable when viewing the impressive specs and considering the improvements made over the original version, which by the way is now being retired to make way for this new younger sleeker version.

The latest Jawbone Bluetooth headset is about 50% smaller than the original, and includes “NoiseAssassin” technology, a further improvement on the original noise cancelling technology originally used, and there is also a much faster processor for heavier signal processing to cancel out ambient noises with ease.

Jawbone Bluetooth Headset

The new Jawbone Bluetooth headset uses tech originally created for The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to enhance communications in hostile and rugged environments. The Jawbone tech also includes an intelligent system of sensors and software whereby it continually adjusts at a rate of 500 times per second which improves audio quality based on what it knows about the environment. Sounds pretty impressive don’t it? And well with all that army technology in there it should be one of the best around this year.

The Jawbone Bluetooth headset weighs in at only 10 grams and has a new faster charging battery that can juice Jawbone up to eighty percent capacity in just thirty seconds; however the overall battery life suffers from the originals capacity with four hours of talk time and eight days of standby time.

Jawbone Bluetooth Headset

The Jawbone Bluetooth headset will be available very soon in the United States of America, will cost around $130.00, and will launch in black, but with a rose gold and a silver version to follow.

Intel chief states Apple 3G iPhone will use Intel Atom Processor

The sheer magnitude of rumours on the Apple 3G iPhone swamps the internet’s rumour channels, everywhere one looks there is mention of Apple’s highly expected next-generation iPhone. Although it would be somewhat amiss of us if we were to simply let this one slip by and a disservice to our readers as well.

Intel’s chief German Burgermeister, Hannes Schwaderer added another layer of polish to the perennial Apple touch-screen tablet rumour mill yesterday by stating unmistakably that Apple will be using the new Intel Atom processor in a future Apple iPhone, which is slightly larger than the existing version due to a larger display screen.

And of course this is not the first time Intel has candidly discussed Apple’s plans to develop commodities which will be based on Intel’s Centrino Atom, (MID) Mobile Internet Device platform. AppleInsider and MacRumors have pointed out that an older rumour calls for a new multi-touch Apple tablet to be launched mid-year incorporating a 720 x 480 display and on a mobile device said to be approximately 1.5x the size of the current version of the Apple iPhone.

Apple 3G iPhone

Intel officially launches Atom in June while Jobs’ next keynote is scheduled for 9th June, so it wouldn’t surprise most to see Otellini up on stage with a multi-touch Newton in hand, well maybe it would be a tad surprising. By the way that image of Intel’s concept MID is from Mr. Blurry’s cam.

An update for you all: ZDNET.de has actually printed a disclaimer from Intel saying that ZDNET has got the whole thing wrong. It appears that Intel now claim that Schwaderer’s comments are generic and not based on any specific knowledge concerning any possible future Apple iPhone models.

BlackBerry access to Cognos Lotus Software busted by IBM

IBM has just released software which allow BlackBerry users to be able to access more of its apps such as Louts Connections and Cognos business intelligence software. This is apparently an ongoing trend to provide mobile phone access to enterprise applications, and follows on after a similar announcement from SAP that said it is building a version of its Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software for the BlackBerry.

Vice president of Lotus software for IBM, Kevin Cavanaugh says: “We think this is a trend that is happening in the industry where you’re taking enterprise applications and wanting to carry them around on a handheld as well as get them on laptops.”

These developments are also quite good for BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion, who happens to have a new challenger budding in the workplace in the guise of the Apple iPhone. So far the Apple iPhone has shown to be most popular with consumers thus far, but Apple has stated they plan to add native support for Microsoft Exchange as they begin to assemble an enterprise push.

IBM completed its acquisition of Cognos sometime earlier this year, and now BlackBerry users will have access to IBM’s Cognos 8 Go software, which is a version of the business intelligence software designed for the BlackBerry.

The other IBM software which runs on BlackBerry includes the latest version of Sametime, the instant messaging client, Lotus Notes 8.01, and the WebSphere portal and dashboard software. Lotus Connections allows BlackBerry users to view blogs and wikis created by co-workers.

Those users that wish to acquire the IBM software will of course need to visit a web page via their BlackBerry mobile phone and download the small app which will allow them to access the IBM software.

RIMs BlackBerry 9000 to gain iTunes synchronisation

Fans of smart phones are obviously excited about the announcement of Research In Motion’s BlackBerry 9000, which is also known as the Blackberry Bold, and Research In Motion’s Apple iPhone killer. But then again BlackBerry mobile phone users are somewhat of a different breed to those who use the Apple iPhone. The BlackBerry’s reason for existence is the always-connected e-mail, and BlackBerry users do tend to be mostly business types that are afraid of being out of touch even for a moment, it’s all business with BlackBerry’s.

While the Apple iPhone came about out of the Apple iPod, and counts music playback as a primary feature, the BlackBerry Bold, or 9000, or RIM iPhone killer, whichever you wish to refer to it as, is primary focussed on its core communications features such as telephony, messaging and e-mail along with new physical improvements such as its bright colour display screen.

You can gain an insight into this focus in a detailed hands-on review of the Blackberry Bold at Crackberry.com, and even then media playback isn’t mentioned until the 3rd part and with no more than just a paragraph. Then again 1GB of onboard memory really isn’t enough for the most ardent of music listeners out there, although the memory can be expanded to up to 16GB.

Probably the clearest indication is while the BlackBerry 9000/Bold may echo previous BlackBerry’s and ships with the Roxio app to organise music on the PC and transfer to your mobile phone. Research In Motion is preparing a new app known as Blackberry Media Sync, which lets the user use Apple’s iTunes to transfer music files to your mobile handset. Which means of course that once you accomplish getting music onto the BlackBerry 9000/Bold, a powerful internal speaker system may actually make all the difference when listening without headphones a reasonable option, maybe a sort of futuristic Boombox so to speak. And apparently the Apple iPhone’s speaker system isn’t quite up to scratch for this.

Although, for those ardent music lovers out there who are desperate for a new mobile phone, the Apple iPhone is still the most obvious pick, especially that the new Apple 3G iPhone is waiting to strike in the wings. But if you are a diehard BlackBerry fan, or someone concerned mainly with having e-mail access at all times then the BlackBerry 9000/Bold is possibly the best alternative to the Apple iPhone at present.

Motorola girlies up their Motorola RAZR2 mobile phone with pinkness

Not one really for the butch type guys out there in mobile phone land, and personally I don’t think I’ll be rushing out to grab hold of the Motorola RAZR2 clamshell anytime soon. However if you happen to find yourself floating about Korea, and maybe on the lookout for a girly type mobile phone for your girlfriend or spouse, you can get hold of this girl-power cuteness inspired rendering of Motorola’s flagship clamshell design mobile handset in the form of the Motorola RAZR2 Pink Silver. How sweet looking!

According to the Managing Director of Motorola Korea, Lim Joung Ah, he states: “With its luxurious yet tranquil look and carefully-selected features, the RAZR2 Pink Silver was designed to appeal to the confident young generation.” I’m sure everyone at Motorola is hoping Lim Joung Ah has it right with this one.

Motorola RAZR2

Previously there has been news concerning a Motorola RAZR2 V9 Ferrari Edition maybe being in the works, however, this one is different though, so here’s a bit of spec-wise on the RAZR2 Pink Silver for you to ponder.

The Motorola RAZR2 Pink Silver has, as one would guess, a girly pink casing with an espresso coloured keypad that when stylishly paired with the mobile phone’s cool metallic silver trim gives it the appearance of a high-end designer fashion phone. The RAZR2 Pink Silver still sports the RAZR large 2 inch external LCD display screen, Bluetooth 2.0, built in camera and USB connectivity, as most Motorola RAZR mobiles do.

Motorola RAZR2

As yet the pricing for the Motorola RAZR2 Pink Silver is a mystery; however should you wish to own one or gain one as a gift for your girl, SK Telecom will be offering it all over the place, well in Korea that is of course.
