Nintendo Wii Music fails to impress: no top ten showing

November 17th, 2008 by Peter

Whenever Nintendo Wii launches a big game title you can expect it to do very well in sales. That is not the case with Nintendo Wii Music, as it has not even made it in to the US top ten. The new game has sold fewer than 81,000 units in the first 11 days since the release.

Nintendo Wii Music was surrounded by so much hype, but it failed to leave up to its predecessor, Wii Fit, which sold about 687,700 units in the same amount of time as the Wii Music had been released.

One reason why the game has not proved popular is due to the saturation of games in the genre, like Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Digital Spy has picked up on the fact that the Wii Music did not come bundled with hardware.

Sony PS3 Blu-ray Bundles Shipping to Stores

November 17th, 2008 by Alan

With Christmas right around the corner, it is no surprise that we have been hearing about console bundles and packages appearing on the internet. Electronic Theater has today received confirmation that the new Playstation 3 Blu-ray Console Bundles are available to ship to retail stores all over the UK.

At the moment there are already a few bundles available for the PS3, but it has made clear today that Sony have made extra stocks of new bundles ready for retailers wishing to stock up for Christmas.

Already out is a LittleBigPlanet and original 80GB model bundle, but now there will be a new bundle containing an 80gb console complete with a DualShock3 pad, a Blu-Ray remote and a copy of either I am Legend or 300 on Blu-ray Disc , all with a retail price of £299. Popular retailer Play.com is already offering their own Blu-Ray bundle as for the same price of £299 they are giving out the 80gb console, a ps3 game in James Bond: Quantum of Solace along with a Batman Begins Blu-ray and remote, all with free delivery…not a bad deal if you ask me considering the original launch 60gb PS3 was £425 with pretty much nothing!

Make sure you check your favourite online retailers as they are sure to be offering similar bundles, let us know if you spot any other bundle bargains.

One Laptop Per Child Give One Get One: Price double $100

November 17th, 2008 by Mark

Now we all love anything to do with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) because it is all about charity at the end of the day, even though the price is double the $100 target. Europeans will be happy to know that they can have a slice of the pie as well because Amazon say that they will ship outside the U.S.

You can choose from two options which are “Give one” and “Give One. Get One”, basically you can buy one or you can but one and the second one goes to charity which is good in my eyes.

27 EU nations and a couple of non-EU countries are now included in this Give One, Get One (G1G1) scheme; we love this idea because it means a child will get one of these laptops. OLPC and its partnership with Amazon is a great idea and we can see this being mayhem trying to ship these OLPC laptops out to customers. More information over on Amazon.

Fallout 3 sells most in series: Xbox 360 has 55% of sales

November 17th, 2008 by Peter

Fallout 3 has become the best selling game from the series; the game from Bethesda has sold more copies in the UK than all the other titles in the series combined. Sales of Fallout 3 have now surpassed the original Fallout, as well as Fallout Tactics and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel.

Fallout 3 looks set to be a good earner for Bethesda, as sales of the game have also been 57 percent higher than their other title, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

When looking closely at the sales chart supplied by GfK Chart-Track, 55 percent of Fallout 3 sales were on the Xbox 360, 28 percent on the Sony PS3, and the remaining 17 percent on PC. This is not proof that people prefer the Xbox 360 version, it is just more people own an Xbox 360 console.

H-Sphere Control Panel Review

November 14th, 2008 by CommunicateBetter

The H-Sphere control panel is developed by PSOFT, Comodo’s website hosting and server automation division.  It currently runs on the most popular operating systems including Windows, Linux and Unix and supports a number of database systems such as MySQL, MSSQL and PostgreSQL.  Scripted in the Java programming language, H-Sphere is a multiserver hosting solution capable of handling any database compliant with SQL.

Features

H-Sphere is known for its ease of use and functionality.  It comes with an integrated billing system and offers various payment methods.  The program also supports nearly thirty payment gateways along with six E-payment services including PayPal.  A plethora of tools make it easy to design and maintain your site with support for Microsoft web building technologies and numerous programming scripts.  H-Sphere provides easy access to your web hosting provider with a built-in support system.

Benefits

Recent analysis of competitive web hosting control panels among H-Sphere, cPanel, Ensim and Plesk indicate that H-sphere is the most secure and reliable.  As a highly extensible multiserver cluster, it has the ability to manage a wide range of servers from a central location.  Your databases, mail and domains can all be maintained right from the user interface.  H-Sphere also allows you to integrate more servers with a few easy clicks.

H-Sphere isn’t as much recognized for ease of use like other solutions.  For this reason, the novice may find it somewhat complex for their hosting needs.  On the other hand, the experienced webmaster will appreciate the advanced feature set and all the control this program gives the end-user.  For those who require assistance, H-Sphere provides a lot of online documentation along with help from the program’s vast community of users.

With multilingual support in more than 10 languages and exclusive features, H-Sphere sets the stage for an efficient hosting environment.

Disadvantages

H-Sphere offers several benefits but its disadvantages are considerably greater than other control panels.  For instance, licenses for H-sphere accounts tend to be more expensive than the competition.  These licenses are however, reusable and sold as clusters rather than a server, the situation with Ensim.

Going back to complexity, the installation, configuration and upgrade procedures for H-Sphere call for a higher level of system administration.  Although everything runs seamlessly after being set up, just getting there can be a challenge for beginners.   Some users have also stated that the saturation of advanced features makes this control panel too complicated for a small business solution, particularly when used as a single-server installation.  Supporters have fired back by claiming that the benefits of H-Sphere are more abundant when used on a clustered multi-server platform.

Other complaints are related to the extensive use of Java which serves as a drawback for some.  A client-side firewall may also block out the software without proper configurations.  The biggest knock on H-Sphere is the lack of a comprehensive data backup utility, a feature that has essentially become standard on the control panel market.

Conclusion

So is H-Sphere right for you?  It certainly makes a viable hosting solution, but you should definitely take the good and the bad into consideration.

The Benefits of Windows Reseller Hosting

November 13th, 2008 by CommunicateBetter

It looks as if the battle of Windows and Linux has spilled over to the reseller hosting arena.  Although Linux is a popular hosting choice well known for its flexibility and stability, resellers may find that the Windows system offers advantages that could make it a more viable solution.

Easy Management

Providers such as ResellerChoice offer all-in-one solutions on the Windows platform.  For example, reseller customers are not required to administer multiple accounts to keep track of their clients, whereas the operation is generally spread amongst various control panels with Linux.  This make things quick and easy by allowing you to manage the accounts of all your clients from a centralized interface, saving you the time of not having to switch back and forth.  Windows reseller hosting supports a wide range applications scripted in various languages and development tools.  This gives you the ability to run a site scripted in PHP and driven by MySQL databases right beside your Microsoft technologies.

Professional Programming Tools

One of the biggest advantages Windows gives to the reseller is the use of ASP and ASP.Net.  These tools are more powerful than the average language and are able to create dynamic web pages with ease; technologies that are not widely available on a Linux server.  ASP and ASP.Net also work well with some of the most popular content management systems, allowing you to create sites that exceed the norm.

When hosting your reseller account on Windows, you will generally have access to the latest technology which can be added to your services.  You can offer Exchange 2007 to your clients along with services such as ActiveSync, Push Technology, SharePoint and Windows Mobile.  These additional services give you a more efficient means of marketing your professional hosting service and can go a long way at bringing in extra income.

Another reason more resellers are flocking to the Windows is because of the SQL Server, Microsoft’s database management system.  This software has proven to be very efficient and reliable at handling a wide variety of complex applications.  MS SQL is one of the fastest growing solutions on the database market, able to give you the competitive edge needed with a reseller account.

Power and Flexibility

In comparison to Linux, a Windows-based control panel acts a clustered solution, powered by Microsoft’s AD (Active Directory) technology.  This simply means that the platform is designed for Enterprise level hosting, offering enough flexibility that is able to meet the demands of your growing business right from the start.

Linux will always make a solid choice whether it’s for a shared, dedicated or reseller accounts.  At the same time, you should also know that the Windows platform can provide solutions that just might work out better for you and your clients.  When partnering with a reseller host making use of this platform, you are essentially offering your clients a wealth of opportunities to benefit from - the latest technology along with the capacity their businesses need to grow.  If you desire a high-quality reseller solution able to endure the long-term, look no further than the Windows OS.

Must Have Security Features

November 12th, 2008 by CommunicateBetter

When researching different web hosts, its easy to get so caught up in the glamorous features that you forget about what is truly important - security.  In order to protect the integrity of your website, you need to invest in a web host that offers various security features.  Here are some of the essentials you should keep an eye out for:

FTP: File Transfer Protocol or FTP, is a network protocol that provides a means for transferring files over the web and from one computer to another.  A web hosting company offering FTP will allow you to create and protect your accounts with usernames and passwords.  This helps to ensure that only authorized users will be able to access the files you uploaded to the server.

SFTP: SFTP stands for Secure File Transfer Protocol, meaning it is offers more protection than FTP.  SFTP prevents sensitive information such as usernames and passwords from being intercepted during transit.  SFTP is often referred to as SSH File Transfer Protocol as it uses a secure shell to transfer data.

SSL: SSL, Secure Sockets Layer is a critical security feature that should be incorporated on any website dealing in goods and services.  As an encryption protocol, SSL keeps web-based communications private and secure.  Because many consumers are weary about shopping online, several of them will do not business with you if they cannot find a valid SSL certificate on your website.

SSH: SSH, Secure Shell Host is one of the most effective features that can be used to protect your communications.  SSH offers secure encrypted channels that allow you to remotely access and execute commands over the web.  It’s utilization of public-key cryptography helps to prevent hackers from securing vital information.  SSH is primarily found on Linux and Unix hosting accounts.

Firewall: Although most networks are protected by some type of firewall, many web hosts do not provide their clients with access to them.  This security mechanism will keep intruders out of the network and prevent attacks on the server.  A reliable host should offer you some type of authority where the firewall can be configured to keep malicious surfers away from your website.

DDoS Protection: A Distributed Denial-of-Service attack is one of the oldest yet most common threats to the network operating system.  This type of exploit is typically executed by an army of compromised computers that have been ordered to attack a specific machine.  When a successful DDoS attack occurs, it can have an adverse affect on each website on the server.

More often than not, the end-users are those who suffer most.  If you plan to use a shared host, DO NOT over look this feature.

Spam Filter: On the surface, spam is not all that threatening.  However, beneath it lies many tricks and nasty infections.  As soon as you activate one of your email accounts and put it to use, the spammers are sure to come.  These unsolicited messages often carry phishing scams and malicious software such as viruses, worms and Trojans.  Aside from threatening your system and identity, these messages consume a lot of bandwidth and storage space as well.  Although there is no guarantee that a filtering utility will catch all of your incoming spam, it will reduce the load  dramatically.
